If your company in the Netherlands is ready to hire people then this is often a good sign. The company is growing and you can continue with your future plans. It thereby improves the continuity of the business and not unimportantly, working together is often more fun than doing everything on your own! 

Different options in terms of ‘staff’

So how do you hire people and what do you need to think about when doing so? In the Netherlands there are multiple options: 

  • “ZZP” or freelancer;
  • Employee;
  • Via Payrolling.

For all three options it is important that the administration is kept properly updated. In all three cases, there must be an agreement between your company and the freelancer, the employee or the payroll company. 

ZZP (self-employed) or freelancer

A ZZP’er works for and with your company but does not actually enter into employment. As a ZZP’er you can hire yourself out in the Netherlands. You are responsible for employee insurance and when the work is finished the assignment ends.  

This can be a lucrative solution if you need someone temporarily. Often ZZP’ers are true specialists and charge a higher rate than a ‘normal’ employee. 

Employee

If you offer someone an employment contract from the company, then you employ him/her and you are responsible for the insurances and payment to the Tax Authorities. Does the employee become ill or is the work finished? Then you are obligated to continue paying wages.  

You can use a payroll service bureau for carrying out the administration. You can also do it yourself but in practice the Dutch rules and legislation often prove to be very error-sensitive and time-consuming. 

Payrolling

If you can’t find a ZZP’er and you don’t want to bear the responsibility for the employee, you can outsource the legal employment. This way you have more flexibility in offering contracts and depending on the construction you can end the contract per day or per month.
