If you hire employees in the Netherlands, some procedures are mandatory. The personal data needs to be filed, the monthly data needs to be submitted to the Tax Authorities, an employment agreement needs to be in place, and last but not least, payments need to be made to the employees.

The branch of the activities determines if a Collective Labor Agreement is applicable and even if there is a pension fund for the employee(s). As an employer your are responsible to arrange this all in the correct way.

Social security

In the Netherlands the social security system is 100% covered by the employer. So on the payslip of the employee no withholdings for social security will be calculated.

Most of the payroll systems will submit a wage tax form that will be send automatically to the Tax Authorities. The outcome of the tax form needs to be paid by the employer.

Expat payroll

Special rules also exist for an expat, not only salary requirements but also very interesting advantages on the tax withholding.

If you employ an expat, it is recommended to have a payroll provider that also offers immigration services.

Salary split payroll

A salary split is a difficult process. If an employee is working in multiple countries some tax benefits could be applicable and split payroll needs to be done. If you choose a payroll provider make sure they have a lot of international payroll experience.

Salary administration process

To do the salary administration by yourself will be a big challenge. Not only the systems but also the specific employee and employer requirements are difficult and will take a lot of your precious time. Outsourcing is the best solution. The payroll provider arranges the calculation, pays the employees, pays the taxes and ensures all the mandatory requirements are met for a simple monthly fee. Via a portal you and your employee(s) will have insight to the data and personal information.
